How excited!
When preparing to study abroad or having already received an offer from a school or university in Spain, you have the option to apply for a student visa in your home country, country of residence, or in Spain itself. Please be aware that the visa process can take some time, so it is advisable to apply for the visa 2-3 months before your planned trip.
How long do you intend to study in Spain?
Study visa (Type C): for study periods of more than 90 days and less than 180 days (3 to 6 months). With this visa (Type C), you will not need to apply for an NIE. However, on the day your visa ends, you will be required to leave the country.
Study Visa (Type D): for study periods longer than 180 days (more than 6 months). Upon arriving in Spain, you must apply for an NIE.
To begin with, you must be clear about the required documents you need to prepare in order to obtain a student visa to Spain.
Here are the required documents for the student visa:
- National visa application form.
- Recent passport-sized photograph.
- Health insurance, which must cover all risks provided by the Spanish health system during your stay in Spain, without co-payments. The most common insurance brands are Sanitas, Adeslas, Caixa, etc. You can compare them and choose the one that suits you best.
- Proof of finance (IPREM Mensual: €600,00). For example, if you are applying for a 12-month visa, this means that you need to have €600,00 x 12 = €7200,00 in your bank account. You can ask your bank for a bank certificate. (If you have a sponsor, please provide a description of the sponsor’s funds and your relationship).
- Letter of acceptance (From language school, training center, university, volunteer program, internship, etc.).
- Proof of accommodation (You can provide a booking for Airbnb, a housing contract, or student residence, etc.).
- Valid passport.
- If you are under 18, it is necessary to provide the legal original and a copy of the authorization letter from the parent or guardian.
- Medical certificate: A medical certificate is required to prove that you do not have any disease that could have serious public health implications under the International Health Regulations 2005. You need to go to an accredited hospital for examination.
- Criminal record check certificate: You must provide proof of a criminal record check for the last 5 years in your country or countries of residence.
